In a statement to the UK Parliament, Andrew Mitchell, the UK’s Deputy Foreign Secretary, declared that the UK is prepared to work with international partners to utilize all available options, including activating the “snapback” mechanism and terminating the Iran nuclear deal, in response to Iranian regime’s continued violations of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Mitchell’s remarks came after a question from Member of Parliament Anthony Higginbotham, who expressed concerns about Iran’s nuclear program exceeding the limits set by the JCPOA and going far beyond what is necessary for peaceful purposes.

In his response, Mitchell acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, “We are ready, alongside our international partners, to use all available options to address the problems you have outlined, including activating the snapback mechanism and ending the JCPOA about Iran.”The snapback mechanism, a provision within the JCPOA, allows for the reimposition of UN sanctions on Iran if it is found to violate the agreement.

The UK’s willingness to utilize this mechanism, along with the possibility of abandoning the nuclear deal altogether, signals a significant shift in the country’s approach to dealing with Iran’s nuclear activities. The UK’s stance comes amid ongoing tensions in the region, including the conflict in Gaza and the recent exchange of attacks between Israel and Iran. The situation in the Middle East remains volatile, with the potential for further escalation.

Members of both the House of Commons and House of Lords in the UK have issued strong calls for the government to proscribe the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. Over 60 lawmakers have signed a letter to the UK’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, stating that “given the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, it is now more urgent than ever to proscribe the IRGC.” They argue that such a designation would “constitute a significant step towards peace, stability, and justice in the Middle East and beyond.”
