The Canadian Parliament, under the leadership of MP Judy Sgro, a senior member of the ruling party and former Minister of Citizenship and Immigration (2003-2005), held a significant session on Monday to delve into the human rights violations occurring in Iran under its clerical dictatorship.

The session saw participation from various parliamentarians, senators, and their assistants, bringing to the forefront the pressing issues in the Middle East linked to the Iranian regime.

The discussions underscored the Iranian regime’s role in domestic suppression and its contribution to regional terrorism, particularly highlighting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). There was a unanimous call for Canada to designate the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization, recognizing their involvement in promoting terrorism and internal oppression.

A key focus of the session was the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran. Speakers pointed out the recent executions of political prisoners and referenced the mass murder of 30,000 political prisoners and activists in 1988, emphasizing the need for accountability. The session concluded with a demand to end the impunity enjoyed by regime leaders, including Ebrahim Raisi, known for his involvement in the 1988 massacre.

MP Judy Sgro’s remarks centered on the necessity of a redefined approach to the Middle East, particularly addressing the Iranian regime’s domestic and regional role. She highlighted the Iranian uprisings, especially the one in September 2022 led by young girls and women, drawing global attention. She also noted the progress towards the designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization in Canada.

Professor Ivan Sascha Sheehan of The University of Baltimore presented a speech on the Iranian regime’s efforts to infiltrate political and academic centers in the United States and Canada. He stressed the importance of understanding these operations for the integrity of national security and democratic institutions in both countries.

Prof. Sheehan also discussed Tehran’s influence operation, aimed at undermining U.S. policy and portraying the leading Iranian opposition group, the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK), in a misleading light. He underscored the regime’s use of disinformation and intimidation tactics to maintain power and suppress dissent.

Zoom participant Mr. Ali Safavi, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, reported on the escalating rate of state-sanctioned executions in Iran, pointing out the regime’s culture of impunity. He also highlighted the ongoing protests and acts of rebellion by Iranian youths against the regime, particularly targeting the IRGC and the Ministry of Intelligence and Security.

The session ended with a call to the international community to recognize the Iranian regime as a central figure in terrorism and warmongering. Mr. Safavi urged for the designation of the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, expulsion of regime agents from Canadian institutions, restoration and reinforcement of UN sanctions, and recognition of the Iranian people’s struggle against the regime. The call to hold regime leaders accountable for their crimes, particularly the 1988 massacre, was echoed, emphasizing the threat they pose to global peace and security.
