Activities of Iranian Resistance Units—August 2023

In recent times, the Iranian regime’s aggressive and expansionist tendencies have become more pronounced, particularly in the light of the escalating conflict in Gaza. As the casualties, mainly of innocent civilians, mount, fingers point towards Tehran for inciting and perpetuating these crises.

Critics argue that the religious theocracy ruling Iran utilizes these external conflicts to divert attention from pressing issues at home and to fortify its grip on power. With the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, and his acolytes reportedly stoking these fires, global leaders are now voicing concerns about a potential new war in the Middle East, with Iran’s involvement evident.

So, why does the Iranian regime feel compelled to fan the flames of war?

To answer this, we must consider the trinity of problems that the Iranian regime seeks to mask by externalizing conflicts:

  1. Systematic Human Rights Violations: Domestically, the regime’s hold on power is maintained through systemic oppression. The nationwide uprisings within Iran have indicated that any relaxation in this repression might spell the end of the regime.
  2. Sponsorship of Terrorism: The Iranian regime’s disruptive activities span across the region. The establishment of the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) and its Quds Force underscores the regime’s commitment to this cause. Massive funds are pumped into supporting proxy wars, as seen in countries like Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, and Iraq.
  3. Nuclear and Ballistic Missile Programs: Far from being merely a defense initiative, these programs further the regime’s objective of regional dominance and sponsorship of terrorism.

Western diplomacy, especially from European nations and the US, has often been criticized for being too lenient on the Iranian regime. Such conciliatory stances have inadvertently emboldened Iran, as evidenced by the deteriorating human rights situation within the country and the growing instability in the Middle East.

However, the solution doesn’t lie in waging a foreign war against Iran. The Iranian people, through the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) – a conglomerate of opposition groups seeking regime change and democracy, present an intrinsic solution to the Tehran conundrum.

Supporting this Iranian solution is essential. The NCRI, led in its resistance against the ruling regime, offers a viable democratic alternative. For the global community, a definitive policy towards Iran should commence with the designation of the IRGC as a terrorist entity, considering its role in sponsoring terrorism and warfare. Strengthening sanctions against the regime would further inhibit its warmongering.

Yet, equally critical is the international community’s endorsement of the Iranian people’s right to resistance and their pursuit of freedom. This is not just a step, but a leap towards ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region.
