Ingrid Betancourt, elucidated the ongoing human rights violations and massacres in Iran, drawing parallels between past and present crimes committed by the Iranian regime.

Former Colombian Senator and 2022 Presidential candidate, Ingrid Betancourt, delivered a powerful speech at the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) international conference on the mass executions of political prisoners in Iran in 1988. During her address, she underscored the need to question the audacity of the Iranian government and reproved the world leaders’ policies of appeasement and submission towards Tehran.

She voiced her unwavering support for the Iranian Resistance and its President-elect, Maryam Rajavi, and emphasized the importance of unity in this cause.

While delivering her speech, Betancourt expressed: “We are thinking about what happened 35 years ago. 30,000 people were massacred. But what we’re commemorating today is the ongoing massacre of the people of Iran. It’s not 35 years ago. It’s 44 years of massacre, of violation of human rights.”

She also castigated the global community for their lack of meaningful action, particularly around Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “We know, we know that Iran is on the path of gaining a nuclear bomb. We know it. We know that they have enriched uranium to an 84% purity. We know that they have amassed enough uranium to destroy our countries, our freedom, and our democracy, and yet we want to sign a nuclear agreement with Iran,” she lamented.

Betancourt’s criticism of world leaders continued as she questioned their willingness to lift economic sanctions against Iran, despite the regime’s support of warfare in Ukraine and the kidnapping of foreign citizens.

In her closing remarks, she reinforced her solidarity with the Iranian resistance and Maryam Rajavi: “We are standing with Maryam Rajavi. And we are standing with our brothers and sisters because I’m taking the word, our brothers and sisters of Ashraf. Because it will not happen again.”

With her impassioned plea, Betancourt called for a more robust global response to the situation in Iran, insisting that policies of appeasement and submission are not adequate, and urging that the time has come to stand in solidarity with the Iranian resistance.
