As Iran commemorates the anniversary of the 1979 revolution, the regime’s efforts to showcase widespread popular support through pro-government rallies and annual propaganda campaigns have been starkly contrasted by a wave of defiant actions from the country’s rebellious youths.

In dozens of cities, these young dissenters have marked the occasion by targeting the regime’s symbols of repression and corruption, challenging the four-decade-long rule of what they describe as “religious fascism.”

In a bold statement against the regime’s oppressive tactics, the youths in Isfahan and Kermanshah directed their protests at the Revolutionary Guards’ Basij forces by deploying explosives. The Basij, known for its role in quelling protests and suppressing the voices of students and young activists, was similarly targeted in Kerman. These acts are part of a broader pattern of resistance, with Iran’s youth increasingly targeting the IRGC and other instruments of the regime’s repression, terrorism, and exploitation of public resources.

The recent activities underscore a growing determination among Iran’s youth to defy the regime’s attempts to instill fear and maintain control over a restive society through harsh measures, including repression, executions, and violent punishments. In Tehran and Neyshabur, for example, rebellious youths targeted Basij bases involved in spying on and suppressing student dissent. Meanwhile, in Isfahan, they set fire to the entrance sign of an IRGC Basij base, signaling their refusal to be intimidated.

The anniversary of the 1979 revolution also saw these youths expressing their dissent by targeting banners and posters of regime leaders and symbols, including those of regime founder Ruhollah Khomeini and current supreme leader Ali Khamenei, in cities across Iran. Their actions represent a clear rejection of the regime’s ideological foundations and its continued repressive governance.

Moreover, the youths have shown solidarity with Iran’s impoverished populations, targeting regime centers responsible for attacking and demolishing the makeshift homes of slum dwellers. This aspect of their resistance highlights a broader critique of the regime’s policies, which have exacerbated economic inequalities and social injustices.

Despite the regime’s extensive efforts to suppress dissent, including a record number of executions in the closing months of 2023 and a continued harsh stance against political dissidents, the actions of Iran’s rebellious youths reflect a resilient spirit of resistance. Their persistent efforts to challenge the regime’s authority and call for democratic reforms illustrate a clear message: no amount of repression will deter the Iranian people from pursuing their aspirations for a more just and democratic society.
