With tensions escalating, the world watches closely as concerns over women’s rights in Iran reach new heights. On Sunday, October 15, 2023, unsettling scenes unfolded in a Tabriz pastry shop where a young woman, shopping without a head covering, became the target of security forces. Eyewitness accounts from the scene relay that she was physically accosted and violently shoved, causing injury to her leg.

This confrontation took an even darker turn when a video emerged online. The distressing footage shows the woman on the ground, audibly crying and shouting out protests such as “Death to Khamenei” and “Death to the Dictator.” What followed is even more disturbing. Bystanders witnessed security forces assaulting the young woman a second time, with such intensity that she was rendered unconscious. Her current location remains a mystery; some reports suggest she was taken to a mental institution, while others believe she is now under the watchful eyes of the Department of Intelligence.

Parallelly, Armita Geravand’s tragic tale continues to stir emotions. The young woman, attacked by Hijab Guards in a Tehran metro station, now lies in a coma at Tehran’s Fajr Hospital. Last reported, her vital signs were deteriorating. Geravand’s assault resulted in a cerebral hemorrhage, plunging her into unconsciousness from which she has yet to awaken.

The restrictions and warnings are not limited to public spaces. Female students are now facing threats directly linked to their education.

Reports confirm that at least 20 female students from Tehran’s Allameh Tabatabaii University received ominous letters, seemingly from the university’s administration. Despite the university’s letterhead adorning these notes, the absence of dates and numbers raised suspicions. The content was clear: adhere to the new dress code or face disruptions in their academic journeys.

In a related incident, on Saturday, October 14, students at Amir Kabir University were warned by security patrols. The “offenses” they were cited for included mingling of genders, un-Islamic clothing, wearing short pants, unbuttoned coats, and sporting piercings.

These back-to-back incidents and subsequent warnings have sparked outrage and concerns internationally. As the debate over personal freedom versus cultural norms continues, the question remains: How will the Iranian regime respond to these rapidly growing tensions?
