On May 24, 2023, Iranian opposition President-elect Maryam Rajavi of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), was welcomed at the European Parliament for a crucial discussion on Iranian developments.

The high-profile visit provided the platform for Ms. Rajavi to address a meeting attended by dozens of Members of European Parliament (MEPs), which elicited a resonating response from several participants.

One of the most prominent voices in the room was Dorien Rookmaker, an MEP from the Netherlands and a member of the EP Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. She stood firm in her support for the Iranian Resistance, Rajavi, and the ongoing upheaval by the Iranian people.

“Thank you, Mrs. Rajavi, for being here with us. I can say that we are greatly honored because you’re so brave and so persistent, and you have so much patience,” expressed Rookmaker in her opening remarks, capturing the admiration of her peers and constituents.

In her comprehensive statement, she underscored the European Parliament's support for the Iranian people's demand for freedom and their struggle against tyranny.

“Decades of struggle are culminating in an uprising that will end the reign of terror in Iran,” she declared, referencing the movement that began in September 2022, which cost over 800 lives and led to the arrest of 30,000 people.

Drawing attention to the critical role of women in the movement, Rookmaker applauded their contribution as evidence of widespread support for the opposition. “The slogan, with or without hijab, is a sign of unity of the Iranian people who are determined to shed the terror of their oppressors,” she stressed.

She voiced the collective European rejection of dictatorship, calling for leaders globally to stand with the Iranian people. In her words, “Europe must never in any way or form try to establish a normal relationship with a regime that committed so many crimes.”

The passionate Dutch representative ended on a hopeful note, expressing support for a democratic, non-nuclear Iran.

“I’m so honored that I’m given the chance to express my support for the democratic Iran opposition. We know the people of Iran want a democratic, non-nuclear republic, and I’m confident that the regime in Iran will change,” Rookmaker affirmed.

With the call to action for world leaders to assist in establishing a democratic Iran, Rookmaker and her colleagues at the European Parliament demonstrated steadfast solidarity with the Iranian people and their resistance.
