On June 20, the US State Department released an email reiteration of previous statements regarding the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
The email included explicit denials of American support for the organization, reflecting a November 14, 2022, statement asserting that the US did not regard the MEK as a viable democratic opposition or provide any material aid.
Despite the US’ position, the organization dismissed allegations about its representative legitimacy and voiced stern objections to the seeming indifference to the recent Ashraf-3 attack.
In a deadly assault on Ashraf-3, the rights of asylum seekers and international human rights agreements were flagrantly violated, leading to the death of an MEK member and injuring over a hundred more. Critics accuse those endorsing the US’ stance of signaling their approval to the perpetrators and the theocratic regime.
Calls for reassessment come in light of historical experiences like the Shah’s overthrow, emphasizing the Iranian people’s sole authority to choose their representation, particularly in a democratic republic after the oppressive religious regime’s fall.
Support for the Iranian people’s democratic aspirations resounds globally, evidenced by House Resolution 100, backed by 239 representatives and echoed by thousands of legislators across the world, including majorities in 30 legislative bodies. These international voices affirm the right to self-determination and emphasize democratic values such as free elections, freedom of assembly and expression, gender equality, and a non-nuclear Iran.
However, the Albanian Minister of Interior and Chief of Police continue to refute the violent acts committed against Ashraf-3 residents, dismissing ample evidence showcased in various media platforms.
Consequently, global outrage escalates over the evident disparities between reported and actual events, particularly the murder of MEK member Ali Mostashari. Accusations fly against anonymous “local reporters” allegedly spreading falsehoods to shield the truth.
The ongoing international uproar raises hopes for a day when accountability for past policies will finally be acknowledged.
