Recently leaked documents from Iran’s Foreign Ministry have exposed an extensive campaign by the country’s regime to discredit the opposition group, the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK).

The campaign reportedly led by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and its terrorist Quds Force involves spreading false information about MEK’s activities.

The Quds Force-associated Tasnim news agency published a piece last week accusing the MEK of attacking a school in Ahvaz, southwest Iran, with homemade mortars. The agency claimed that the mortars, due to their lack of precision, hit a nearby home instead of the school grounds. However, a spokesperson for MEK categorically denied these allegations. They stated that the MEK neither launched any mortar attack in Ahvaz nor targeted a school or a residential home.

They further described these allegations as baseless and an attempt by Tehran to distract from a recent campaign by Iranian youth against the regime's oppressive apparatus, including attacks on the IRGC and regime's Foreign Ministry websites.

MEK, further described these allegations as baseless and an attempt by Tehran to distract from a recent campaign by Iranian youth against the regime’s oppressive apparatus, including attacks on the IRGC and regime’s Foreign Ministry websites.

The leaked documents, published by the “Ghiam Sarnegouni” (Uprising Until Overthrow) Telegram channel, detail meetings held by the Political Committee tasked with confronting the MEK from January 2019 to February 2021. Representatives from several state entities, including the Ministry of Intelligence & Security (MOIS), Quds Force, IRGC Intelligence, and the State Security Forces, among others, participated in these meetings. The committee’s main task, as defined by these documents, was to discredit the MEK in all fields.

The reports of the second and third sessions emphasized the MEK’s capabilities, including intelligence gathering, recruitment, and their ability to inflict political and economic blows on the Islamic Republic of Iran. They acknowledged that the MEK, unlike other opposition groups, has unity, an organized structure, and the intent to establish Resistance Units, making them a significant threat.

The revelations from the leaked documents underscore the regime’s fear of the MEK and its commitment to discrediting the organization through falsehoods and propaganda. The extent of the campaign shows a concerted effort by the regime to undermine the only opposition group seen as having the potential to be an alternative to the current regime. The recent false allegations of mortar attacks in Ahvaz are just one example of this ongoing discrediting campaign.
